That was very nice indeed...I'll admit I didn't see the idea at all.
I misread things and thought it was Black to move before 27.h3 was played by White. In that context ...Rae8 wasn't very hard to spot since it is by far the best way for Black to get his Ra8 and queen into the game. It's one of those strategic moves that needs little calculation to know it's good. With 27.h3 played, it's a whole different thing since you have to calculate it all out. Still it seems like 27...Rae8 is the only candidate move that doesn't involve retreating the bishop (which is really ugly). Kudos to your student for working it out!
